When In Rome…

Guess what? I spent a day in Rome. Yes! A day in Rome and I was able to see about 10 major tourist attractions. I traveled on a time budget and I was dedicated to get the best out of it. Rome is such a beautiful country. You know that saying “Rome was not built in a day”, I saw it for myself. The architectures are phenomenal. The people, the food, transportation and accommodation, everything was amazing for me.

Solo Travel in Rome

The year I started exploring, I decided to go on a Europe tour and I went alone. For some reasons, I was not scared to travel on my own. It was a bit risky as I did not have a local number to make calls in case of an emergency or a phone set up with internet to get directions as I was exploring. I was lucky as there was wifi almost everywhere I went. I took a train from Milan to Rome, and I booked my train ticket via EuRail as I was able to use my expertise to obtain train passes for 4 different countries. Depending on your preference, location and the fare, you can take a bus, train or rent a car. Knowing that I had just a day to spend, I was worried because I thought I would not have enough time to see all the attractions on my list. But to my greatest surprise, I explored more locations than I thought I would explore. First thing first, I made sure my accommodation was close to the train station and close to the City Center as well. I did my research and saw that there were a lot of tourist attractions around the City Center and there were tour buses, just in case I needed to go far.

Rome is known for its history. If you have a short time in Rome, I will recommend taking a tour bus for sight seeing. There are several options you could pick from. These buses stop at all major attractions in Rome and you can get on and off when the buses stops at each location. All you need to do is make sure you have your tickets handy. The buses usually come around the attraction at about every 15-20 minutes, which gives you enough time to take photos. If you want to spend a longer time in a location, you can and then get on the next bus when you are ready. If you plan to stay longer than a day in Rome, you could get a ticket for 2 days (at an extra cost). On the bus, you will learn about each location, basically you are not missing out. In terms of taking photos, I usually look for strangers with professional cameras. The reason behind this is, once they own a professional camera, there is a high possibility they can take good pictures with phones. Sometimes, I ask ladies just like me or a member of a family to take me a photo for security reasons. I believe it is safer to give such strangers your phones to take photos of you.

  • Fiume Tevere

If you have few hours in Rome, one location you have to see is the “COLOSSEUM“. People travel far and wide just to see the Colosseum because of its history. I am glad I saw it.

Accommodation

Depending on your budget, you can either stay in a hotel, rent a room in a house, Airbnb or stay in an hostel. For me, I was on a budget so I stayed in an hostel. I made the booking through bookings.com. On there you can get several kinds of booking. Make sure you check the reviews of the places you want to stay. I stayed at “The Romehello” It was very clean and cute! I had my own bed, my own wardrobe, a side table, side lamp and I shared a bathroom with just two people who were my roommates. You can actually choose the number of people you want to be with in a room or you can get a single occupancy room. You can also choose the gender you would like to be in a room with. They just make the process easy and comfortable for you. They offer breakfast at a cost if you would like. They had a storage in case you want to leave you luggage while you explore and they had a gaming area as well. You get to meet new people of all ages when you stay in hostels. The service from the staff was amazing. The gave me directions on where to go, how to get to the train station since it was close by and helped me with my huge luggage hahaha!

5 things to look out for when traveling

  1. Know your overall budget and add a little to that for unforeseen circumstances (Sometimes, you end up spending more)
  2. What are places you would like to see? (This would help you know where to get accommodation)
  3. How long you would be spending in the location?
  4. How safe is the area you are staying?
  5. How is the transportation system in the City (This would help you know the best way to go around)?
